At Step Change Outsourcing, supporting career progression is a core part of how we invest in our people. One of the ways we do this is through our Covering Team Leader Course, a development programme designed to give our employees an insight into leadership and the opportunity to build the skills needed to take the next step.

Led by our Head of Learning and Development, Stuart McFarlane, the programme prepares participants to step in and cover Team Leaders during periods of absence, giving them a genuine understanding of what the role involves day to day, all within a supportive learning environment.

Delivered across four modules, the programme covers a wide range of leadership topics – from communication and emotional intelligence, to coaching skills and performance management. Rather than focusing purely on theory, the course also encourages self-reflection and practical application, helping participants understand the difference between being a strong individual contributor and leading a team effectively.

Programmes like this play an important role in building leadership capability from within SCO, ensuring we continue to develop confident, capable leaders who understand our values and ways of working.

One participant shared their experience of the course so far, saying: “The course has really helped me build on skills I feel I had but wanted to develop further. I’m hoping to become a Team Leader in the future and this has given me confidence that I’m moving in the right direction.”
